Wal-Mart Begins Construction of Supercenter in Central Reno

After a yearlong wait, work has finally begun on the new Super Wal-Mart to be located off East Second Street on the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony. The delay was caused mostly by the massive, lengthy environmental clean up from the previous tenants, a radiator repair shop. 6,000 tons + of oil-contaminated soil was removed from the site. Once this superstore is complete Wal-Mart will be closing the Northtowne location and giving the employees there an option to transfer over. Even if all their current employees located at the Northtowne Wal-Mart transfer over to the new superstore, they will still be hiring something like 200 additional employees to handle the larger demands of the much lager store.

Despite Upturn in Market, Few New Staff Positions

There are very few companies hiring new staff to handle the uptick in home sales that jumped up by 49 percent compared to last year’s January sales. Very few title companies are following in Northern Nevada Title Company’s footsteps in hiring 4 employees to handle the dramatic increase in paperwork. Most companies are waiting for the sales to be more solid while others are still saying they do not expect to return to the boom-era staffing any time soon due to higher-ups handling their own administrative work.Here’s hoping for a better year and more jobs out there for those unfortunate unemployed masses. Widening of Moana Lane

As some of you may have heard Moana is next on the upgrade train. RTC is moving forward with the plan to widen Moana from 4 to 6 lanes between South Virginia Streetand U.S. 395. Other future major expansions include the intersections of Moana with South Virginia and Kietzke Lane.
Moana’s project is being largely funded through the motor vehicle fuel tax increase that was passed by voters in 2008. Some say they would like that money to be utilized for other concerns like the loss in the Police force and the Fire Department.
Currently the project is only partially designed and RTC officials still don’t know how much commercial land will have to be bought by the government for this expansion.
Some business might have to be relocated even though the project doesn’t touch the actual structure. There’s a possibility of relocating whole buildings because of the parking spaces that will be taken away for the project.
I say good luck to the 22 +/- business affected by this change; as many would say location is EVERYTHING!

USGBC: 7.9 Million Jobs Tied to Green Construction over Next Four Years

Good numbers for green construction! The US Green Building Council (USGBC) and Booze Allen Hamilton issued a report saying 7.9 million us green jobs will be boosting our economy over the next four (4) years.
Compared to 2000-2008’s numbers which saved/created 2.4 million jobs which generated $123 billion in wages. I hope USGBC succeeds in making ‘Green Building’ obsolete for a much better and cleaner tomorrow for future generations.

Reconstruction of The Alexander puts 200 to Work

Twenty-three buildings totalling 230 units were destroyed by the fire started by an arsonist on July 30th. The re-building of this apartment complex, located in South Reno, is a blessing to many subcontractors and tradesmen. This project could employ as many as 200 tradesmen through the winter!

Retailers Wary about Hiring for Holidays
